Local Talent to the Rescue!  And PAFL Says Thanks.

Dear Performing Arts at Fawn Lake Members and Friends, As I’m sure you’re aware,  PAFL is hosting “60’s Night!” on Friday, April 5.  This our first fund raiser. Why the fundraiser? No one is immune from the effects of inflation, least of all our club.  Sustaining ourselves and keeping ticket prices within reach are constant struggles for us, so any additional funds we acquire will further our mission and benefit all of us. We’ve sold 88 tickets to date and this is a good start but we have a big room to fill and we have to sell at least 50 more seats to make this effort a success.  Our goal is to raise a minimum of $2,000.  We need you to make this happen. Eleven of your neighbors have volunteered as “The Fawn Lake Jam Band” and are donating their time and talents at NO COST to PAFL. You probably know some of these folks, but we’d guess that you didn’t know they could play or sing: Band Ken Accousti: Organ & Keyboards Matt Aiken: Acoustic Guitar & Vocals Brad Gregory: Guitar Darren Long: Drums Kevin McCarthy: Piano & Keyboards Xavier Perez: Guitar John Quaderer: Guitar & Vocals Chris Twigg: Guitar & Vocals Vocals Linda Catullo Matt Collier Marietta Gress “60’s Night!” has been produced by Kevin McCarthy, John Quaderer and Darren Long.  It’s going to be a lot of fun! If you haven’t done so already, please buy your tickets now to support PAFL – and of course, to show your appreciation for your Fawn Lake Jam Band neighbors! Thank You, Jim Silk, President

Good Things Coming Your Way!

Hi Everyone, Your PAFL leadership team is busy working on our 2024 event calendar, while we look forward to setting up our 2025 Fawn Lake concert schedule. There is a lot going on in our club, so I want to take this opportunity to bring you up to date.Busy CalendarIf you have been keeping up with our email notices, you already know that we have a “60s” night scheduled as a fund raiser for PAFL on April 5th at The Cove. This benefit for our club by the Fawn Lake Jam Band is produced by Fawn Lake’s own Kevin McCarthy, Darren Long, and John Quaderer. Next up, on May 3rd we are lucky beyond our  means to present Intersection Trio at the FLCA Clubhouse, a smash crossover musical group that will play beloved chamber pieces as well as more contemporary music amidst their comedic banter. Come see these award-winning international soloists, TV personalities, and recording artists up close and in person! Our final scheduled music event for 2024 will take place at the FLCA Clubhouse on August 10th, featuring four giants in the international symphonic world – Michelle Kim, violin, Wendy Sutter, cello, Brett Deubner, viola, and Blair McMillen, piano – who will perform for us in their first collaboration with each as a piano quartet! Right here in Fawn Lake! But Wait, There’s More…It is really important for you to know that Michelle Kim, renowned violinist and PAFL’s Artistic Director, has been working diligently on our behalf amidst her own busy performance schedule to bring these amazing talents to our doorstep. And, since all of the world’s top musicians tour and perform on roughly an annual calendar that extends from September to June, Michelle is already at work helping us line up the great musicians we will host in Fawn Lake during 2025. (BTW, Michelle is off shortly for a quick trip back to Seoul, Korea, for a few days to be interviewed by the uber-famous soprano and international opera star, Sumi Jo, for a ‘world contemporary artist’ TV program. And in May she returns to Korea one more time to appear as Concertmaster for the upcoming international music festival there featuring members of the KBS Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Finally, Michelle will conclude her 2024 performance year with PAFL on August 10th in the FLCA Clubhouse.) So, there you have it. Buy tickets! Come join the fun! All the best,Peter SchmittEvents CommitteeSumi Jo

Meet Marcus and Riza Printup

We hope you are as excited as we are about Performing Arts at Fawn Lake’s very first upcoming Jazz Series Concert on February 23rd, so here is a little bit of background on these amazing artists, Marcus and Riza Printup.Marcus Printup has been a member of world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center since 1993 under the direction of Winton Marsalis, and has played trumpet with such greats as Dianna Reeves, Eric Reed, Cyrus Chestnut, Wycliffe Gordon, and Marcus Roberts. He records regularly for several major labels. Famed harpist Riza Printup spans both Classical and Jazz worlds with her amazing repertoire, and has collaborated in live performance with many of the greats of our era. Riza has also performed with the late great American jazz saxophonist and flautist, Frank Wess (featuring the music of legendary jazz harpist, Dorothy Ashby); virtuoso cellist Yo-Yo Ma and jookin dance master L’il Buck (Saint-Saëns’s classic ‘Le Cygne’ for harp and cello); Lady Gaga (Elton John: I’m Still Standing – A Grammy Salute); and has been featured with Paquito D’Rivera in his presentations of Charlie Parker’s classic, Bird With Strings at Jazz At Lincoln Center. In 2014, Riza joined world renowned soprano Kathleen Battle in Ms. Battle’s presentation of ‘Underground Railroad: A Spiritual Journey‘ at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia, PA and at Ms. Battle’s magnificent return to the Metropolitan Opera House (2016). Riza has recorded with her husband, acclaimed Jazz Trumpeter Marcus Printup Gentle Rain (2020), Desire (2013), A Time For Love  (2011), Ballads All Night  (2010), and Bird of Paradise  (2007); with Grammy nominated pianist and composer Kenny Werner No Beginning, No End; and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra featuring Chick Corea and the music of Mr. Corea. And if that isn’t enough, the Printups have a deep, shared passion for education. Marcus is involved with JALC’s Essentially Ellington Competition, The New School (Manhattan), The International Trumpet Guild, and Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead at the Kennedy Center. Together, in 2019, Marcus and Riza established a non-profit, RiMarcable Music For Arts & Education, to enrich and educate young audiences, and they collaborate regularly with The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, WBGO, Midori & Friends, Homes For The Homeless, The Riverside Fine Arts Association, New Jersey Central Jazz Association, and Jazz House Kids. Riza’s curriculum “Jazz Explorers Unit 1: Eras of Jazz” is now in elementary schools across the US, Canada and Japan. Individually, their merits speak for themselves, and together they are superstars!  Soon we will have the honor and pleasure of hearing them play expressly for us here in Fawn Lake. That’s right – this absolutely extraordinary Jazz duo will play at The Cove at 7:00PM on Friday, February 23rd. You won’t want to miss this event. Here’s a link to Gentle Rain on Spotify to give you an idea of the incredible performance that awaits you on February 23! See you there,Sally Elliott, ChairCommunications Committee

Here Comes 2024!

It hardly seems possible, but Performing at Fawn Lake just passed its first anniversary of bringing world-class talent into our community to perform for us. Thank you for your tremendous support, and for sharing your invaluable guidance along the way to help us shape the overall concert experience in our hosted events. We really do pay attention to those membership and audience surveys and try our best to adopt changes that contribute most to your enjoyment of live music here. All of us on the leadership team are focused now on building our club’s event calendar for 2024. We plan to schedule four music events in the coming calendar year, approximately one per quarter, with room for one more in case something completely irresistible unexpectedly falls into our laps. We want to lock in as many artists as possible in order to give all club members plenty of time to plan along with us. As you know, we are only interested in hosting world-class talent for our events, so you may be wondering what our specific criteria are for engaging the artists. Following are the guidelines we have adopted. In each hosted event, at least one performing artist must meet at least one of these criteria: Had a starring role in a Broadway production (in NYC or London’s West End), Is a Grammy Award winner, A recently featured soloist (instrumental or vocal) with one or more of the world’s leading symphonic orchestras, An endowed chair holder with one of the world’s leading symphonic or jazz orchestras, Medalist in one or more of the major music competitions in the world, Under contract as a soloist or featured ensemble musician with a major recording label, A professional ensemble that regularly performs live across our nation and/or internationally. We chose these criteria carefully to keep our efforts focused on the PAFL founding principles and charter. Over the last year, three of our 309 members expressed interest in PAFL expanding our club’s scope to host local or ‘regional’ musicians. With so many other venues in the area that regularly feature local and regional talent, we don’t think PAFL has anything valuable to offer to them. Don’t forget, we are all volunteers! Putting on four – or perhaps five – major productions here in a year’s time is our sweet spot, and we don’t want you to get audience fatigue, either. There is much more to share with you about how we are evolving our club to make things even better, but more about that later. All the best, Peter SchmittEvents Chair

Something for Music Lovers Over the Holidays

/*! elementor – v3.17.0 – 08-11-2023 */ .elementor-widget-image{text-align:center}.elementor-widget-image a{display:inline-block}.elementor-widget-image a img[src$=”.svg”]{width:48px}.elementor-widget-image img{vertical-align:middle;display:inline-block} Greetings! All of the volunteers for Performing Arts at Fawn Lake are focused now on hosting our very first Jazz concert on February 23rd, when Marcus and Riza Printup will dazzle us with their amazing talents. Be sure to put this event on your calendars. But there is a lot of time between now and then, so I thought it would be helpful to compile a short list of noteworthy music events taking place through the holidays and into January that are within a reasonable distance from Fawn Lake. Here goes – National Symphony Orchestra, The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC              NSO has a lot going on. Pianist Yefim Bronfman will headline the NSO with Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 November 30th – December 2nd. Then on December 7th the NSO Salutes the Military with a Holiday Pops concert with Broadway Star Norm Lewis (this one is free to all current, retired and veteran military members). On January 14th the Kennedy Center Chamber Players hold their Winter Concert. Then Violinist Gil Shaham plays Dvorak’s Violin Concert with the NSO from January 18th – 21st. Check it all out here and more at https://www.kennedy-center.org/nso/home/concerts-and-tickets/all-nso-events/. Fredericksburg Symphony Orchestra             FSO’s Holiday Pops concert on December 15th is sold out, but there are still seats available for their Valentine’s Special ‘Romantic Fantasies’ on February 9th at Lifepoint Auditorium. Here is their schedule of coming events https://fredericksburgsymphony.org/all-concerts/. Richmond Symphony               Holiday Brass will be performed at the Louis F. Ryan Recital Hall in Richmond from December 2nd – 3rd, and The Nutcracker at Carpenter Theatre from December 7th – 10th and again December 15th – 17th and 20th – 24th. Then they will perform a full schedule in January, starting with a Tribute to Richard Smallwood from January 12th – 13th. Check out their full concert schedule at https://www.richmondsymphony.com/calendar/list/. Baltimore Symphony Orchestra        This is a bit of a trek from Fawn Lake, but BSO has a really good calendar of events. Check it out here https://my.bsomusic.org/events. Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra        JLCO (including Marcus Printup!) will be on tour with a stop at the Strathmore in North Bethesda, MD, on January 26th https://www.jambase.com/show/jazz-at-lincoln-center-orchestra-music-center-at-strathmore-20240126. PAFL 2024 Member Benefits

In case you haven’t explored our new website yet, we have put together a new package of Performing Arts at Fawn Lake member benefits for 2024 that we hope will make you want to join up now and get to the front of the line. It is always a challenge to check all of the boxes as we prepare for our sponsored events, so the benefits we have put in place for 2024 are aimed at giving members meaningful privileges, while at the same time helping to make ticketing and attendance more predictable and manageable. So, here isthe benefit lineup for each $25 membership that we have put in place for calendar 2024. Membership Eligibility – All residents and property owners of Fawn Lake are eligible for membership in Performing Arts at Fawn Lake. Under FLCA guidelines, up to 10% of membership may be non-residents/non-property owners of Fawn Lake. Interest is building outside our community for membership in PAFL, so we have to manage this aspect carefully. Privileged Access to Event Tickets – As you know, we are constrained by the venue spaces available to us for our concerts. The FLCA Clubhouse (the one that string musicians like the best because of the acoustic properties of the space) hasn’t been available, but hopefully one day soon it will be. Fire code limits occupancy of this space to 146. The Cove, which FLCC has graciously and generously rented to us for concerts, can handle about 300 under the fire code, but configuring this space with a stage for the musicians and risers for the audience provides for only about 225 total audience members. So, in order to be fair, we sell tickets for all music events exclusively to current members on a first come, first served basis during the first two weeks that tickets go on sale. We call this the ‘member blackout period.’ Discounted Ticket Prices – For 2024, we are additionally offering music event tickets to members at a discounted price during the blackout period. This means that if you purchase your tickets during the member blackout period for an event, you get them all at a discounted price. All tickets sold to members and non-members after the member blackout period will be at the full ticket price. Memberships and Guests – Each $25 membership for 2024 extends all benefits for one person. There is no limit to the number of household member and guest memberships that you may purchase (subject to the eligibility requirement noted above). This means that if you purchase, say, memberships for yourself and your spouse, plus two more for as-yet unnamed guests you would like to invite to our performances, all four memberships will be eligible for Privileged Access and Discounted Ticket Prices during the blackout period for each of our hosted music events throughout 2024. Social Events – Lastly, it is our custom to host social events for the famous musicians who perform for us, so that you can relax and get to know them personally. These events are only available to members, also on a first come, first served basis. So, there you have it. We hope you will become a Performing Arts at Fawn Lake member for 2024 and take advantage of all these privileges and enjoy the great music we bring to our community for you. All the best, Jim SilkSecretary/Treasurer

Why Would World-Class Musicians Perform at Fawn Lake?

It is no secret that live music performance outside of rock and rap have been on the decline in America for several decades now. This is especially noticeable in the classical music realm, where the generations most familiar with this type of music are fading away. Quite commonly now, the major established concert venues across the country have empty seats even for what the old-timers would have called ‘masterpiece’ performances, headlined with the top soloists in the world. Why is that? A lot has to do with changing tastes in music. And, sadly, in recent decades public schools across the nation have by-and-large dropped classical music elements from general curricula, condemning it to the unknown for millions of children. For sure, the Covid pandemic upset performance schedules for two straight years globally. And there exist excellent recordings of all the major classical pieces performed by the world’s greatest musicians going back to the early part of the 20th century. If you don’t have the best-of-the-best on CD or DVD, you can surely stream them; so why shell out for a live performance? Well, throughout the ages and to the present day the world has always witnessed the emergence of talented musicians who dedicate their lives to their art, and they continue to congregate in great performing ensembles, large and small, around the world. These immensely dedicated artists want to perform. It isn’t always just about collecting a paycheck, either. They feel the need to share their exceptional art and talent in a highly personal way, and they derive energy from their audiences. Everyone treasures their personal connections, and the world’s top performers are no different when it comes to playing before a live audience. Word of great places to play before great audiences travels fast in the music world. You may ask, ‘don’t the top musicians only perform in the largest music venues in the world?’ The short answer is ‘no.’ Performers like to perform where their art and talent are deeply appreciated, and they do try to fit special smaller venues into their busy schedules when they can. It also helps if the smaller venues are associated with other pleasures in life such as, say, a community of truly friendly and generous people who welcome them, or maybe even one of the absolute best golf courses in Virginia. Most of us classical music and jazz fans know about the famous small venues where the greats often play – Carnegie Hall’s famous Weill Recital Hall in NYC (268 seats), or the Chicago Cultural Center (550 seats), just to name a few. They tend to be fully booked. You would be absolutely astonished at the number of immensely talented and famous performers who appear at the small university venues in our part of the world. So, why not perform before a loving audience at Fawn Lake’s Community Clubhouse (146 seats) or FLCC’s Cove (225 seats) if you are a famous musician with another gig in Washington or our general neighborhood? All the best,PeterEvents Committee
